The milk they produce: · Has a fat rich in short to medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) compared to cows with one rich in long-chained triglycerides (LTC’s). Digestion of MCT’s five times faster and more complete than that of LCT’s owing to rapid assimilation and energy source. It is a valued resource for subjects suffering from malnutrition or fat mal-absorption syndrome (Boza and Sanz Sampelayo, 1997; Chilliard et al., 2006) . · Has an average of 4.1% lactose level compared to the 4.7% in cows milk. Ethnicities who don't produce the enzyme lactase have less problems drinking it. (Boza and Sanz Sampelayo, 1997; Chilliard et al., 2006). · One in ten people are allergic to the main protein produced in cow milk (alpha S1 casein protein) . It can be confused with lactose intolerance because it produces the same symptom of bloating. The particular casein protein in goat milk produces a curd that is smaller and softer than that of cow milk (Boza and Sanz Sampelayo, 1997; Chilliard et al., 2006).
Interesting Facts · Goats are pregnant for 5 months usually carrying twins (sometimes three or four). · Goats can be used to manage woody weeds such as blackberry bush, bamboo, elephant grass, mimosa, burrx, boxhorn to name a few. · The goat live export trade is strong in countries such as Taiwan, Borneo, South Korea, and Malaysia. In these countries Australia provides a large percentage of their import market. · Manure for fertilizer. In Malaysia they refer to this resource as black gold!
