History Recognized in 1995 as an experimental breed and as a individual breed in 2000. “Mel” is from melanin or black pigment and “aan” is from Saanen. It originated from the highly regarded Saanen buck Thundersley Vanquisher that was imported from England in 1943. It carried the recessive black gene probably from cross breeding in England with the Black Spanish Granada or Murican Dairy. It has not been uncommon for other unrelated Toggenburg and British Alpine breeds to present this recessive gene and such examples have been used to strengthen this new breed. |
